Open Knowledge Engine

The Open Knowledge Engine by Ooloi Labs is a system made up of tools and services that help teams learn, share knowledge, make decisions based on data, and drive implementation at scale.

Research-driven and learner-centred approach for engagement

Learner-centred design has been one of the foundational approaches to build any product or artefact at Ooloi Labs. It helps in understanding the audience types and their preferences for the context. It enables constructive methods to be successfully executed in new and powerful ways.

Building content through the instructional design lens

We create learning journeys for our audience. We do this to systematically design, develop and deliver products and experiences, in a manner that is efficient, effective, and engaging for different audiences. It may range from simple webinars to high fidelity play-based learning experiences.

Testing and iteration for refined outcomes

To ensure the content produced and the delivery mechanisms work for the target audience and in the given context, it is essential to get continuous and detailed feedback from learners and other stakeholders. This helps in refining prototypes and make the content more informed.

Delivery mechanisms that are efficient, effective and scalable

Any virtual engagement aims to get close to sustained in-person training as possible. We achieve it through a web of touchpoints that are accessible and familiar to the participants. A Learning Management Systems, Webinars, The ‘Open Knowledge Engine’ and Existing Communication Channels for one to one mentoring and peer support are a few examples.

What we offer

Using the right mix of low and high touch elements, we design systems for remote learning that are more accessible and affordable for people. The virtual nature of the course reduces the space and time limitations for learners, field experts, leaders and people on the ground, allowing them to interact with each other, creating value for all involved.

High fidelity content creation

Over the past years, we have developed content in domains like education and livelihoods (skill development), water, waste management, sexual and reproductive health, menstrual health management among others. We create content for different age groups and user personas by applying a human-centred approach to the content, engagement and delivery.

Translation of content into bite-sized learning modules, content writing, visual design and building audio formats can have a range of fidelity. Based on the learner type, the curriculum and engagement type, we design content using a mix of content design and delivery methods.

Content optimisation and design

With the increase in access to information, there has been a shift in how content is consumed daily. From consuming knowledge through books, documents and reports, it has changed to consuming bite-sized micro-content. The delivery can be spread over a longer duration but has to be interactive to ensure the audience is engaged with the content and the delivery mechanisms.

With some of our partners, there is plenty of content available that has been created over the years. We partner with them to take their existing content, optimise it and make it atomised. We support organisations to build this packaged atomised content specific to their context.

Research and Piloting the learning journeys

Core to the philosophy of being learner-centered is to constantly test actual content with learners. We work closely with our partners to not only deeply understand the audience, but to pilot learning journeys, and to bring  feedback and research back into the design process for better learner outcomes overall.

Impact Assessment

With any intervention/program to transfer knowledge, it is essential to determine if the intervention has succeeded and needs to expand or needs iteration or a change of setting. To ensure the vision of a program is achieved, we help organisations research to determine the effect of the intervention.

Support through guidelines, training and capacity building

With some of our partners, we don’t work on the content at all. But since training is not only about the content, it is also about delivery, facilitation and building capacity. We support our partners to close the loop. We co-design guidelines that provide the right push to go virtual and engage with users through their new content delivery mechanisms and strategies.

Integrated Fluorosis Mitigation

INREM Foundation works on various issues withing their focus on water quality and health. Ooloi Labs partnered with INREM to build learning journeys and content delivery techniques to train their partners on the basics of Fluoride and Fluorosis. To do this, we designed and piloted a course that included Integrated Fluorosis Mitigation that helps practitioners, government officials, and NGO leaders get an understanding of methods around fluorosis mitigation in a way that enables action.

STEM for Girls

Quest Alliance is a not-for-profit trust that equips young people with 21st-century skills by enabling self-learning.

Ooloi Labs is working with Quest Alliance to build digital bite-sized content for young girls to make informed life and career choices and to introduce them to STEM as a career pathway, gender, 21st-century life skills and coding.

INREM Training Partnership

As INREM goes about running various virtual training programs training program staff from partner NGOs in one course, Medical Officers, ANMs and ASHAs under the NPPCF program in another, we are now engaged in a longer term, continuous fashion. We are helping to research, observe and help iterate learning content, learning experiences, and interactions for better learning outcomes and impact.

Previous work in content, training and facilitation

We believe that grassroots workers and communities are best placed to make the deepest, most contextual and long lasting impact for themselves.

Let us help you build systems to support them through systems for continuous learning from peers, experts and other practitioners.

Knowledge sharing and implementation at scale

Organisations are always trying their best to launch different programs in different regions to improve and impact the current situation. The process is to do a Pilot and replicate the successful version of the pilot to enable scale. What is usually lost in the process are the nuances of the Pilot. What challenges came in, where were the alterations needed, how were the challenges solved.

It is critical to capture those nuances we scale.

The same we, organisations also have a lot of Tacit Knowledge which goes missing in the process of transfer of knowledge. The Institutional memory is also not documented to enable that transfer.

The objective of the Open Knowledge Engine is to capture these different pieces of knowledge in different forms, combine it with data and share it with the right people.
